Mangroves are highly productive forests adapted to survive in the harsh interface between land and sea and known to host a rich and complex array of associated species and to provide important goods and services, both locally and globally. Unfortunately, despite their many ecosystem services, mangroves have suffered dramatic declines in the past decades due to aquaculture conversion, timber harvesting, and clearing for residential and urban development, and the Philippines is one of the countries in Southeast Asia that continues to suffer from mangrove loss.
Mangrove rehabilitation programs have therefore received much support in response to widespread mangrove degradation. These programs in the Philippines received renewed drive after the 2013 Typhoon Yolanda, which highlighted the role of mangroves as buffer and bioshield along coastlines. Nevertheless, these efforts in mangrove rehabilitation in the Philippines have often met with failures and are seldom evaluated.
Through the MPA Support Network, the Zoological Society of London-Philippines in partnership with the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), Department of Environment and Natural Resources-Biodiversity Management Bureau (DENR-BMB), will launch the 2019 Best Mangrove Awards in this year’s Para El Mar. The special awards give recognition to organizations, communities and LGUs and provide incentives for the best practices in mangrove rehabilitation and protection which will strengthen and sustain efforts towards management of this valuable ecosystem. This award will further build public awareness of the importance of coastal greenbelt establishment and management in response to a changing climate.
